In ancient days, Samurais and Daimyos (loads) were the most of tea masters. Their usual days were always with the very strong tension as they would be death panished easily to take their own or their under workers. Sometimes they would fight with their katanas and the fight didn’t finish one of them die.
They will be cut off their head if their mind are not enough stabled just a little bit. Their weapon, katana, was crafted to kill. They always try to catch a very small off guard, such a bit of mistake will take their life away; this used to be the battle of samurais.
Not to let enemy catch a small off guard and non upset is the only way to survive, so they trained Zen to awaken and stablize their mind everyday. Samurais used to risk their life everytime, so they braced themselves to live and die.
The moment inside the tea room was the best time-space which gives a relux to Samurais and Daimyos. Eventhough their usual life was life-threatening, so their manners was of course based on the forms of katana and bows. To pursuit the core of tea ceremony, it is necessary to understand and rebive those manners and forms to tea ceremony.
Therefore CHABITO is trying to study Samurai, Japanese traditional dancers and Japanese martial arts fighters’ forms, and also compareing them to tea ceremony manners and forms to rebive Edo period’s style. As CHABITO studys about that, we find that texts and forms of tea ceremony these days are losing sight of essentials.
Similar to that, as we penetrate thought of each manners, we can feel that our manners gets more beautiful. These moves are that even we can’t imagine. For Japanese martial atrs fighers, those seems easier to do that. However it is difficult for people who haven’t experienced any Japanese martial arts at all like us.
It took very long time to notice, penetrate and aquire this level manners, and we started to understand how Samurais made just a cup of tea serious.
CHABITO’s style is far aparting from usual tea ceremony nowadays, but it seems that we are far from ‘unusual’ manners and even returning to ‘basical’ style.
